A letter from the National Hope 08 team
Thank you!
We had no idea what was going to happen in 2008. As the 2007 countdown flew by, we could only hope that the ‘word and action’ vision was out there.
We soon found out that the passion and drive of the church in the UK is amazing, and we saw involvement from a huge variety of denominations and church streams. Thousands and thousands of churches took the ‘do more, do it together and do it in word and action’ challenge of Hope08 and made it their own. We never saw this coming – so many communities have been reached by the gospel that we are humbled and often overwhelmed.
A while ago we commissioned Theos, the public theology think tank, to carry out an independent evaluation of Hope08. This evaluation illustrates how Hope08 happened, what worked, what didn’t, what was learnt and what’s still being dreamt up. It also shows how many people were involved in making Hope08 a success. We can’t take the credit for any of these statistics, but we can get excited about them!
You can find the evaluation on our website if you follow this link
So this e:news is the last you’ll hear from us until the summer, when we’ll be bringing out a brand new resource book. It’s going to be called Hope For The Future and will provide resources, proven ideas, new ideas, best practice examples and lots of stories from last year.
It was
- released on July 1st 2009
- £2.99 each, or order 10 for £2 each and free Postage and Packaging
- available from www.wesleyowen.com, Christian bookshops, 0800 834 315
- pre-order your copy now: ISBN 9781 8602 45725
In the meantime, if you need any information then our website’s still around. We’ve trimmed it down to make it more accessible, so it should be fairly easy to find what you’re after.
We hope you find these resources helpful, and that this year is even better than the last one!
Thank you so much for all your support and enthusiasm,
Fritha
On behalf of the Hope08 team.
Hope 08 and Hope on the Streets Stories
Over the year of 2008 many in Sheffield and the nation took up the Hope 08 challenge of ‘Do more, do it together and do it in word and deed’
Here’s a bit of an overview of Hope 08 in Sheffield
- St Luke’s Lodge Moor litter picked Lodge Moor from one end to the other.
- Darnall had a litter pick too!
- 7 and half tonnes of rubbish was cleared on one of the Hope on the Streets on just one project!
- Good partnerships formed with Sheffield Homes, schools, and other local agencies.
- There were between 100-299 people out on the streets each first Saturday of the month between March and August bringing Hope to the different areas of Sheffield. These areas were Arbourthorne, Gleadless Valley, Upperthorpe/Langsett, Burngreave/Pitsmoor, Jordanthorpe/Batemoor and Hillsborough.
- In Hillsborough the free café continued once a month by invitation
- Chapeltown did an event in the park where 1100 people came.
24-7 prayer week at the beginning of the year
—————————————————————–
There have been knock on effects due to people getting out on the Hope on the Streets Days:-
- In September 2008 Jordanthorpe saw Meadowhead Church out and about again and this is something they are going to do more regularly. Click here for more information
- In Upperthorpe, there was a whole family who were affected by the good news of the Gospel! Others were asking questions and were prayed for.
- The Hope on the Streets initiative in December was a runner up in the Sheffield Partnerships Environment award.
The most important thing, we think, is to tell the stories of Hope08. If you did a Hope08 project then we’d love to hear about it. If you’ve already told us then…tell us again! We want to know everything. We want to know what went well, what challenged you, what inspired you and what encouraged you.

People gathered at the Salvation Army Citadel, despite the horrendous weather forecast, to celebrate and pray together. Here are some of the comments from that evening:
HOPE – YOUR STORIES AND ACTIONS TO THANK GOD FOR…
- For the two young girls who gave their lives to Jesus on the city streets!
- For the opportunity to pray in three homes in a block of flats, the residents seeking prayer for deliverance from demonic activity.
- For the opportunity to pray together in Hillsborough Co-Op and for the work of the Cafe in the Co-op.
- For friendships made at Wisewood Cemetery.
- For the guy who was healed and walked for the first time in 15yrs. He no longer needs his wheelchair.
- For cups of teas and smiles.
HOPE – YOUR DREAMS AND PRAYERS FOR THE FUTURE OF SHEFFIELD…
- That the churches will work together more, and work as one.
- That Christians will be motivated to get involved together, and get out of the buildings and be more active in City wide projects offering incarnational love.
- That a bible study group will start in my home in Whirlow for
not-yet Christian mums in the area. - That HOPE will rise as we wait on the Lord for further direction.
- That God does immeasurably more..’He is the God of the MORE!’
- That people will love each other more.
- That love for the city will grow, through Jesus.
- That wildfire will break out.
- That estates in the city will be invaded by more Christians
- For Sheffield to be known as a city changed by God.
- For empire to die and His Kingdom to rise.
- For salvation among the streets kids. Pubs to close and more churches to open.
